The BC Chapter of the Vocational Rehabilitation Association (VRA) of Canada would like to extend an invitation to CAOT members in BC and across Canada to our upcoming annual Training Day on Friday, November 3, 2017 at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey, BC.  This event will be available via live streaming for those unable to attend in person.
With changes to how cannabis is legislated in Canada pending for 2018 VRA BC is pleased to present an entire day devoted to the complex topic of substance use disorders and the workplace explored through the lenses of medicine, law and vocational rehabilitation.  Our morning speaker is one of the leading experts in addiction medicine in British Columbia, Dr. Paul Farnan, who will address the topics of substance use disorders (SUDs) and the workplace, and safe and sustainable return to work practices for individuals after completion of primary treatment of SUDs.
During the afternoon session Drew Demerse and J. Geoffrey Howard with Roper Greyell LLP Employment + Labour Lawyers will share their perspective as counsel on issues including marijuana and the workplace, employer obligations to ensure its employees are unimpaired and fit for work, how an employer’s duty to accommodate disabilities interacts with this obligation, obligations of disclosure, and how employers are preparing for the legalization of marijuana.
This exciting day will culminate with an interactive presentation from Nora Bryant, Business Development Manager and Carson McPherson, Managing Director with Cedars at Cobble Hill, a full service residential addiction treatment centre located on Vancouver Island.  During this session Nora and Carson will provide participants on opportunity to gain awareness of personal blind spots/biases related to addiction through a guided self-exploration exercise and a case study.  The session will introduce participants to how their perceptions and biases impact effective case management and outcomes when managing complex files with addiction/chronic pain components.
